Orthodontic problems can be apparent by twelve years of age, when most of the adult teeth have come through; however, problems may be detected much earlier (from as early as eight years of age).
Age can influence a number of different things within the mouth. Early examination of the teeth and jaws enables an Orthodontist to detect and evaluate problems and plan for optimal treatment. Early treatment can prevent Orthodontic problems from becoming more severe – which can result in a shorter and less complicated treatment.
For the majority of patients, the best time to commence treatment is just before the last baby tooth has fallen out. This is usually around eight to ten years of age.
Many Orthodontic cases can benefit from early treatment procedures. Some of these cases include; skeletal discrepancies, borderline non-extraction cases, restoring lost space in dental arches, severe aesthetic problems, crossbites and severe overbites or openbites. Treatment of these problems at an early age can produce benefits that would be limited if treated at a later time. This treatment is called a Two Phase Program.
