Edgewise
braces (top) and Begg braces (bottom) are
the most common types of braces used in
Australia. As shown in the top photo, clear
brackets are available. |
Crooked teeth are a common dental problem. Some
experts have estimated that up to 7 out of 10 people
would benefit from orthodontic treatment at some
point in their lives. Orthodontic treatment involves
the design and use of corrective appliances known
as braces, plates and headgear, among others.
These appliances move teeth by exerting a constant
light pressure to them. When the appliances are
tightened, the teeth receive more pressure. In response
to the pressure, a tooth will move slowly through
the jawbone.
Braces are the most efficient and accurate way
of moving teeth. Braces consist of bands, brackets
and wires. They are usually made of stainless
steel and selected metal alloys. Clear brackets
(made of a tough ceramic) are available, usually
at extra cost. Patients return about every four
to eight weeks for adjustments, wire changes and
general inspection of the treatment progress.
There are many different types of orthodontic
braces available, and more than one of them may
be suitable for your particular type of treatment.
The braces that are proposed for you individually
will take many different things into account such
as your age, proposed length of treatment, severity
of your particular case and to some extent, your
aesthetic requirements.
Certain types of braces are more suitable for
particular cases, for example the Invisalign system
is suitable for adults only. Michael Tselepis
will be able to let you know all of the options
available to you in your initial consultation.
There are certain benefits and advantages for
all of the systems, and this will all be simply
explained during your visit, any questions that
you may have will be answered as well.
